QHA Awards For Excellence 2016

Time to nominate your hotel

Nominations are now open for the 2016 QHA Awards for Excellence!

The annual QHA Awards for Excellence program is designed to provide a forum for the public recognition of excellence in individual and group achievement by Queensland hotels. In doing so, the program encourages the pursuit of higher standards of service, presentation and trade practices within our industry.

Nominating is simple, and all QHA hotel members are encouraged to give it a go. The QHA Awards Judges visit each nominated hotel, so the venue will speak for itself. Members from all over the state, hotels big and small, should have a look at the Award categories and consider entering this year.

Nominations close at 5pm, Friday 1 July 2016. Good luck!

For more information, please call Keri Crompton, QHA Partnerships & Events Manager on 07 3221 6999.

QHA Awards For Excellence 2015

Congratulations to the 2015 QHA Awards for Excellence winners!

Honours for the state’s best pubs, hotels and hoteliers were awarded last night at the Queensland hotel industry’s glittering night of the year.

The Queensland Hotels Association (QHA) Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner & Presentation – now in its 23rd year – was held at the Great Hall at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on Wednesday 23 September.

1000 guests flocked to the venue for this annual special event - a celebration of industry achievement and an opportunity for hotel industry delegates to enjoy being on the receiving end of an evening of outstanding hospitality.

Hotels large and small from all over Queensland participated in the 2015 awards program, which this year saw a record number of nominations.

Hosts, Channel 7’s Pat Welsh and radio personality Donna Lynch, presented a total of 43 awards to the state’s best venues in a range of categories: Employee, Liquor and Bar, Development, Gaming, Accommodation, Dining, and Environment and Community. Plus, the highly coveted awards for Best Overall Hotel and Hotelier of the Year were announced. This year also saw the introduction of a new category: Best Outdoor/Non-Enclosed Facility – an award which celebrates the Sunshine State’s love of a great beer garden!

This year’s ceremony paid homage to the ANZAC legacy, acknowledging 100 years of ANZAC service and sacrifice. The evening began with a touching tribute to this legacy, with a remembrance ceremony conducted by the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment. Guests were then invited to kick up their heels with an energetic cabaret performance from the Andrews Sisters tribute act, followed by an evening of post-awards dancing and merriment led by the band Vegas Please.

Guest-of-honour, the Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe MP, was on hand to award Life Membership to Kerry Jones, a stalwart of the hotel industry and recipient of this most prestigious honour.

Major awards included:

Best Overall Hotel              Sandstone Point Hotel

Hotelier of the Year            Helen Rush, Stockman Hotel, Texas

Life Membership                 Kerry Jones

“The QHA congratulates all finalists and winning hotels. Their example sets the standard for others and brings credit to the Queensland hotel industry,” said QHA chief executive Justin O’Connor.

Winners of the QHA awards will progress to represent Queensland at the Australian Hotels Association National Awards for Excellence in 2016.

QHA Members Have Always Known How To Party! - Historic Titbit

The 6th of October 1886 was the inaugural LVA annual ball (Queensland Licensed Victuallers Association as the QHA was known at the time). The night attracted a crowd of almost 400, with nearly all hotels being represented. Reports from The Courier were glowing, describing how "the evening costumes worn by some of the ladies were very handsome". After a toast to the Queen, the party danced "with vigour" until the early hours of the morning to the music of "an unusually large band".-source: QHA Review-August 2005

2009 - The Awards for Excellence Gala Presentation & Dinner attracted a crowd of over 1000, whom dressed handsomly, and partied vigorously until the early hours of the morning (and we have the photographic evidence to prove it!!)
