Under the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008, high occupancy buildings are required to appoint a Fire Safety Adviser. A high occupancy building means any of the following buildings: A class 2 or 3 building more than 25m high (apartments or residential part of an hotel); A class 2, 3 (residential part of an hotel) , 5, 6 (hotel with bar, dining room etc), 7b, 8, 9a, or 9b building that is a workplace (under the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008); and o Where 30 or more workers are normally employed within the meaning of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995, s93 (5) appointment of a WHSO. A class 6 (hotel with bar, dining room etc) or 9b building that the commissioner has decided is an at risk licensed building under section 104KD of the Fire Service Act.
The Fire Safety Adviser has a responsibility to: Be familiar with all aspects of building fire safety Provide advice to the occupier to ensure that appropriate emergency planning has taken place Provide advice to the occupier to ensure that appropriate instruction is carried out at the prescribed times and intervals. Provide First Response Evacuation or Evacuation Coordination training. Fire Safety Adviser accreditation is gained after successful completion of the training by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Refresher training is required every 3 years to maintain the Fire Safety Adviser accreditation. A Fire Safety Adviser is one who has completed an approved building fire safety course. An approved building fire safety course consists of 8 units of competency in Workplace Emergency Response: PUAWER001A to PUAWER008A.
