Age Limitations

It is generally accepted that hotel employees are required to be 18 years of age or older to be involved in the service or preparation of alcoholic beverages. There are some exemptions for family members of hotel operators, and those working under a State Award.

The same applies to being able to work in gaming and gambling areas. People under the age of 18 are prohibited from gaming rooms in hotels and other licensed venues as required by the Responsible Gambling Code of Practice.

Persons under the age of 18 may work in hotels and licensed venues in roles that do not involve the service of liquor or gambling. It is best to seek advice in this area as the regulations change from time to time. The Liquor Act 1992 requires any minor to leave the premises as soon as their working shift is completed.

In Queensland, different rates of pay apply to minors, and it is prudent to check that all bases are covered before employing a minor, or seeking employment as a minor. Guidelines also apply for work experience placements and similar programs.
